  • Has thrown a planned documentary on her movie THE SOUND OF MUSIC into jeopardy for refusing to allow her image to be used in it -- Michael McLean, a talent manager who served as one of the casting directors on the film, says Andrews plans to make a 40th anniversary special of her own in 2005, tied to the movie and that the documentary could seriously detract from broadcast network interest in her project. (April 24, 2003)
  • Served as Goodwill Ambassador for UNIFEM. (1992)
  • An unflagging worker on behalf of several charities, including Operation USA, UNICEF and Save the Children.
  • Recalled that, during the filming of the magnificent opening musical sequence of THE SOUND OF MUSIC (1965), the strong downdraft from the helicopter with the cameraman kept knocking her down as she ran up and down the mountain. Moreover, even though this was the first scene in the film, it was actually the final sequence shot in Europe before the cast and crew returned to the United States.
  • Her movie MY FAIR LADY opened at the Mark Hellinger Theatre in 1956.
  • MARY POPPINS: She was left hanging in mid-air during one particularly long camera set up. The stagehands unwittingly lowered her wire harness rather rapidly. Is she down yet? called a grip. You bloody well better believe she is! fumed Andrews.
  • The author of the Poppins books, P.L. Travers, approved heartily of the casting of Andrews for the film MARY POPPINS (1964) after hearing her only on the telephone. Andrews granted the interview from her bed after the delivery of her daughter, Emma Walton.
  • Walt Disney asked her to play Mary Poppins after seeing her on Broadway in Camelot.
  • Despite the warm and sunny appearance in THE SOUND OF MUSIC (1965), she notes that she was freezing running up that mountain over and over again. Additionally, the downdraft from the helicopter kept knocking her off her feet.
  • During the scene with Maria and the Captain at the gazebo, she couldn't stop laughing at the absurdity of singing so closely to someone else's face. After more than 20 takes, the scene was altered to silhouette the two and to hide Andrews' giggles.
  • Rex Harrison wanted her for the role of Eliza in MY FAIR LADY (1964), since they had played together in the Broadway version.
