- Filed for divorce from his wife of more than nine years, Linda Stokes Caan, citing irreconcilable differences. (April 21, 2005)
- In one scene in THE INSIDER (1999) Lowell asks Jeffrey, Are you talking to me or did someone else walk in the room? James Caan used the same line in THIEF (1981), also directed by Michael Mann.
- BRIAN'S SONG (1971): In real life James Caan (who had been a football player in high school) was a much better athlete than Billy Dee Williams but in the movie Williams' character, Gale, was supposed to surpass Cann's character, Brian, in playing ability.
